We are gathering to honor the life of Michael Shortell. Michael was a beloved son, brother, uncle, cousin, husband, father, and friend. He was also a N.Y.P.D. Deputy Chief. Michael died in a tragic accident at his home on July 18, 2005. In his 26 years on the NYPD Michael has worked throughout the city including:   77th Pct, 7th Pct, 5th Pct, SCU, 72nd Pct, 122 Pct, 49 Pct, 40th Pct, Chief of Patrol Office, Manhattan-South Narcotics, Bronx Narcotics.

All proceeds from this event will be used to fund the Third Michael Shortell Memorial Scholarship Award. Scholarships will be awarded to high school seniors toward their college education. The Scholarship will be open to children of N.Y.P.D. Members of Service, active and retired.

This race and scholarship is sponsored by Michael’s siblings, who want to ensure that Michael’s legacy lives on.

Michael was an active member of the NYPD at the time of his tragic death. He was proud of the job he did and cared deeply about the men and women he served with, as well as the citizens he protected. As Michael rose through the ranks of the NYPD he never forgot where he came from. We were told he was one of the most beloved bosses on the job. He would speak to an officer with the same respect he would give his superiors. If he called any M O S into his office for business reasons, he would never let them leave without asking about how their family was doing. Michael felt everyone should put family first.
Michael was a beloved son, brother, uncle, husband and father of three little girls whom he adored. Although Michael had a great deal of responsibility at his job, his family was his number one priority. He was the type of person that put everyone before himself and would drop whatever he was doing if you needed him.
Michael was easily pleased. When he would be playing with his children, he would say “It doesn’t get any better than this.” Simple pleasures made him happy.
Michael had a sense of humor that is unparalleled. He loved to laugh!
Michael had a deep love for God and his country. He was a proud American.
